Machine vision measurement and gauging is a branch of automated optical metrology in which cameras, structured light sources, or laser-based sensors capture images of a part, and software algorithms extract quantitative dimensional data — lengths, diameters, angles, flatness, runout, and surface profiles — referenced to a calibrated coordinate system. Machine vision gauging is not universally the optimal measurement method. Three primary comparisons define its selection boundaries:
Machine vision vs. contact CMM — CMMs achieve single-point measurement uncertainties below 1 µm and are the reference standard for complex 3D geometry per ASME B89.4.10360.2. Vision gauging sacrifices some absolute accuracy but gains throughput (rates that vary by region inline vs. sampled offline) and eliminates contact-force deformation on soft materials. For parts where tolerance bands are tighter than 5 µm across all features, CMM remains the primary tool.
2D vision gauging vs. 3D imaging — 2D gauging is sufficient for planar features visible in a single camera view. Parts with hidden features, undercuts, or true 3D profile requirements (per ASME Y14.5-2018 profile of a surface) require structured light, laser triangulation, or multi-camera 3D reconstruction.
Machine vision gauging vs. laser micrometer — Laser micrometers provide high-speed single-axis diameter or width measurement (update rates above 1,000 Hz) but are limited to one measurement axis per sensor head.
